The 2018 New Hyde Park Memorial High School yearbook, The Lance, was awarded its fourth consecutive gold medalist critique from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, a national journalistic competition sponsored by Columbia University. However, this marks the first time the publication has won gold while competing in the hybrid category due to its inclusion of video content.

“It was so rewarding to know that we had won gold in the new category,” said current copy editor Andrea Bouzos.

The yearbook also received its highest score in school history and ranked in the 93rd percentile, falling just two points shy of the highly prestigious All-Columbian Honors. This accolade ranks The Lance as one of the very best yearbooks in the country.

Last year’s success serves to remind the current staff to make their yearbook their own. Editor-in-Chief Amanda Saji said, “Being on staff last year and seeing how every individual page embodied strong design, cohesive copy and photos that captured a story, we sought to carry out those very same things this year.”

With another dedicated group this year, adviser Andy Yen and the 2019 staff hope to maintain the same level of high standards and success.
