The Village of Manorhaven will move one step closer to its goal of becoming a Tree City USA by hosting an Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, April 27 in the Manorhaven Nature Preserve. A tree planting ceremony at 11:00 a.m. follows a cleanup of the preserve at 9:30 a.m.
Educational signs are being installed in the Manorhaven Nature Preserve in time for the Arbor Day celebration. The signs mark flora and fauna native to the shoreline area. It is hopeful that the new signs will encourage residents to visit the Manorhaven Preserve, which already features a native plant garden, dog park and community garden.
The entire Port Washington community is encouraged to attend the cleanup and celebration that begins at the Preserve entrance on Manorhaven Boulevard. There is no need to reserve space, but please wear comfortable clothes and bring gloves, a hat and sunscreen. All materials for the cleanup will be provided.
Running from Manorhaven Beach Park on Manorhaven Boulevard to Manhasset Avenue just south of Shore Road, the Manorhaven Preserve is largely hidden by commercial properties. While the preserve begins at the beach park, free parking and access to the trail is available from the entrance to the nature preserve on Manorhaven Boulevard between the Port Washington Senior Citizens Center and the beach park.
Native Greenway, a local 501©(3) has planted over 20 trees in the Preserve this year alone.
“Not enough can be said about the importance of trees to our health, quality of life and well being of our Village,” Deputy Mayor Priscilla von Roeschlaub said. “The Village is proud to work with Native Greenway and the many volunteer efforts funded by grants to replant and restore the Preserve back into a woodland habitat.”
These 20 trees are the start of what we hope will be 50 native trees by the end of 2019. Visitors to the Preserve have seen the gradual changes but all are welcome to become a part of the restoration by volunteering and donating.
