Karl Bumeister, a lifelong New Hyde Park resident and two-time ex chief of the New Hyde Park Fire Department, died at 61 on June 21.

He is survived by his sister Rita and brother-in-law Dennis Finnegan, also a member of the New Hyde Park Fire Department.

Bumeister, who died as a result of medical problems, also left behind his fire department family.

The 43-year member was an integral part of the department, New Hyde Park Fire Department Chief Brian Sherwood said.

“He was always there for the department and a great resource and mentor for the new members that came into our department and into our company,” Sherwood said.

Bumeisters was also an ex captain of the rescue company of the New Hyde Park Fire department, a member of the chiefs association and a member of the New Hyde Park Exempt Volunteer Firemen’s Association.

Bumeister was also a retired assistant director of security from North Shore University Hospital.

Bumeister was willing to help anyone at any time, Sherwood said.

“‘No’ wasn’t really in his vocabulary,” Sherwood said.

Not only was Bumeister a great member of the department, Sherwood said, but he was also a great personal friend.

“He was an overall great person,” Bumeister said.
