The Village of New Hyde Park is kicking off Memorial Day weekend celebrations with the annual Memorial Day Tribute Parade on Saturday.

“This is the one day of the year when we as a village come together to honor those New Hyde Park residents who gave their young lives for our freedoms,” Mayor Lawrence Montreuil said in a message to residents. “Your presence is enough to show that our village will never forget the supreme sacrifice these courageous young men made for us.”

The parade starts at 10 a.m. and assembles in the Lakeville Road parking lot.

The parade will travel east on Jericho Turnpike toward Village Hall, where there will be a brief ceremony and wreath laying.

The parade will continue north on New Hyde Park Road to Memorial Park, where there will be another ceremony and wreath laying.

Following the parade, the G&E Linder Post 8031 of the American Legion will host a reception in the Marcus Christ Community Center.

In Floral Park, the Floral Park American Legion will host a parade on Monday.

The Rev. Gainus Sikes of the United Methodist Church of Floral Park, a Vietnam veteran who retired from the U.S. Army as a chief warrant officer 3, will be this year’s parade grand marshal.

Sikes will also be the guest speaker at the ceremony following the parade.

The parade, starting at 10 a.m., will assemble on Elizabeth Street and proceed north on Plainfield Avenue.

The parade will then travel west on Jericho Turnpike, and a wreath will be laid at the Vietnam Memorial in the parking area near the Reliance Firehouse.

The parade will continue south on South Tyson Avenue to Tulip Avenue and Veterans Memorial Park, where the Memorial Day ceremony will be held from 11 a.m. to about 11:45.

Mayor Dominick Longobardi will deliver the welcoming remarks at the ceremony.
