Queens man charged after spree of local burglaries

A Queens man was arrested by Nassau County police on Aug. 11 and charged with a string of burglaries in New Hyde Park and nearby areas.

Police said the man, Sean Smith, 40, was arrested in Bellmore after officers responded to a call about a suspicious person on the roof of a jewelry store.

Following a police investigation, police said, it was discovered that Smith was responsible for multiple burglaries in Nassau County since July 9. 

The local burglaries police said Smith is responsible for include these: July 9 at Sansone Market, 2147 Jericho Turnpike, Garden City Park; July 9 at RAI Design, 2150 Jericho Turnpike, Garden City Park; July 10 at Thomas Poomkudy DDS, 248-50 Jericho Turnpike, Bellerose Terrace; July 29 at Maharani Supermarket, 1620 Hillside Ave., North New Hyde Park; Aug. 2 at Derrick’s Auto Repair, 268-08 Hillside Ave., Floral Park Centre; Aug. 3 at Chef Wang restaurant, 1902 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park; Aug. 3 at Derrick’s Auto Repair, 268-08 Hillside Ave., Floral Park Centre; and Aug. 5 at Cure Med Pharmacy, 2020 Lakeville Road, North New Hyde Park.

Police charged Smith with 13 counts of third-degree burglary and three counts of third-degree attempted burglary. His arraignment took place on Aug. 13 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Efforts to reach the police were unavailing and information on the arraignment was not available.

According to Nassau County Police Department statistics, the 3rd Precinct saw a 28.26% increase in burglaries at nonresidential properties through July 31 compared with the same period last year. Major crimes in the precinct increased 3.80% through July 31 compared with the same period last year.
