The Sewanhaka Central High School Board of Education said there have been 102 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among students, faculty and other staff members at the district’s five schools since the beginning of the school year.
Superintendent James Grossane said at a Board of Education meeting last Thursday: “We haven’t had to quarantine a lot of staff or students because most people that are in close contact have been vaccinated. We’ve had some short periods of quarantine for some students who were positive.”
Officials said the number of cases has declined in recent weeks.
Sewanhaka is following a school reopening plan made in August and COVID-19 protocols based on Gov. Kathy Hochul’s mask mandate for all school districts in the state.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Sewanhaka has 8,243 students, 584 teachers and 467 additional staff. Confirmed COVID-19 cases amounted to roughly 1.1% of the district.
Elmont Memorial High School had 13 confirmed cases among students from the week of Sept. 1 to the week of Nov. 1, and there were four cases among the faculty and staff.
Floral Park Memorial had six cases among students and seven for faculty and staff.
H. Frank Carey had the most students in the district with confirmed COVID-19 cases, totaling 26, with no confirmed cases for faculty and staff.
New Hyde Park Memorial had 13 confirmed cases for students and seven for faculty and staff.
Tied with H. Frank Carey for most confirmed cases, Sewanhaka High School had 19 cases among students and seven among the faculty.
Recent weeks have seen a dip in cases. From the week of Oct. 25 to the week of Nov. 1, there were 10 cases in the entire district. H. Frank Carey students accounted for seven of them.
