Forty puppies arrived at North Shore Animal League America on Saturday morning. They came all the way from Missouri.

The animal league rescued them from a puppy mill in a combined effort with National Mill Dog Rescue, a group based in Colorado.

Puppy mill dogs are intensively bred to produce a high number of puppies that are then typically sold.

There are mixed-breed puppies as well as Malteses, mini-Aussies, Shih Tzus, Pomeranians and Cavalier King Charles spaniels.

They will be available for adoption on Friday after they have been assessed by  veterinarians.
