Fifty-five new coronavirus cases in the Manhasset school district were counted over the mid-winter recess, with 50 cases found in students at Manhasset Secondary School, according to an email from Superintendent Vincent Butera.

“For the period Friday [Feb. 12], to Sunday [Feb. 21], there were 54 positive student cases reported, with 1 positive staff case,” Butera said in an email to the school community sent Sunday.

The news came nearly a week after Butera announced that the secondary school would operate remotely this week from Monday through at least Friday following reports that a number of superspreader events, said by the superintendent to be “parties/gatherings,” took place in the area. Whether remote operations will extend beyond Friday has not yet been announced.

Butera added in the Sunday email that the remaining five cases were at Munsey Park Elementary School, including four students and one staff member. No cases over the break had been counted at Shelter Rock Elementary School.

“The staff case [at Munsey Park] is unrelated to the student cases and the student cases are unrelated to the Secondary School cases,” Butera said.

Those who have tested positive and their contacts have been notified to isolate and/or quarantine, Butera added.

The superintendent said last week that parents were urged to contact the Nassau County Department of Health and email administrator Allison Rushforth at allison_rushforth@manhassetschools.org if they or their students tested positive over the winter recess.
