Members of the Garden City Fire Department rescued a Mineola man suffering from Alzheimers from the roof of a building on Franklin Avenue early last Friday morning.

Kenneth Jackson, acting commissioner of the Garden City Police Department, said the rescue from the roof of the Pay Half store at 910 Franklin Ave. took place at 7:35 a.m. on June 22.

County EMS workers initially climbed a fire truck ladder to reach the man. But Garden City firemen simultaneously opened a door to an internal stairway and brought the man down.

“Apparently he hid himself somewhere. We don’t know how long he’s been on that roof,” Jackson said. “We were able to retrieve him.”

Nassau County Police had issued a silver alert for the man, 61-year-old Olivero Rincon, a Mineola resident who suffers from Alzheimers on Thursday night. He had been last seen in the store at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday.

A search of places the man was known to frequent was conducted. Rincon’s son saw his father on the roof of the store and called 911, Jackson said.

Garden City firefighters, police and Nassau County EMS responded to the scene.
