Natahn Sawaya CONTEMPORARY GALLERY. Through March 18 No longer just for child’s play, plastic toy building bricks have become material for fine art. The New York sculptor, Nathan Sawaya, is among the most prominent of contemporary artists working with LEGO® blocks. Sawaya’s work, exploring themes of identity, elevates brick art to a new phase of artistic expression through large-scale sculptures that portray complexities of the human condition. Nathan Sawaya: Recent Works is organized by Elaine Berger for the museum’s Contemporary Collectors Circle in cooperation with the Agora Gallery in New York. Dragons & Fairies: Exploring VietNam Through Folktales. will take place through January 8 at the Long Island Children’s Museum. Enter a magical place where five centuries-old folktales bring to life the culture and traditions of Viet Nam. Aspects of modern day life in Viet Nam are interwoven with the presentation of centuries-old folktale in interactive “theaters” where visitors view presentations of such popular Vietnamese folktales as: One Hundred Eggs (Lac Long Quan and Au Co) The Story of Chu Cuoi and the Banyan Tree,The Story of Betel and Areca Nut (Cao sons), The Story of An Tiem and the Watermelons (King Hung and An Tiem), The Legend of the Rice Cakes (Emperor Hung Vuong and sons).

Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. “Using the Lessons of the Holocaust to Teach Tolerance,” the new permanent exhibit of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is now open and invites visitors. Docent-led tours are available at no additional charge. The Center is open Monday thru Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Suggested donation: $8.00 for adults, $4.00 for students to age 18 with ID and seniors (65+). The Navajo Codetalkers of World War II” at Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center. The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County proudly announces this amazing exhibit to be on view to the public from thru December 31. “This exhibit traces the story of the famed United States Marine Corps Navajo Code Talkers. It begins with the original pilot group of first twenty-nine volunteers, who in 1942, developed and tested the original Navajo code.

Nassau county museum of art. Dec 10 though March 18, will present the The Paintings of Louis Comfort Tiffany: Works from a Long Island CollectionDrawn from an important Long Island collection, this major exhibition showcases approximately 125 oils and works on paper by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), an American artist most closely associated with the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements. Centered on Tiffany’s paintings, which he created for himself to memorialize his travels and surroundings, The Paintings of Louis Comfort Tiffany offers an uncommon glimpse into the artist’s personal world. It is the first New York exhibit to focus on Tiffany’s paintings in more than 30 years. The exhibition also includes examples of Tiffany’s decorative arts, especially stained glass lamps and windows.

 

Folk Music Society of Huntington. continuing on the third Thursday of each month, the Cinema Arts Centre’s Sky Room will be home to the Folk Music Society of Huntington’s Hard Luck Café series. The 8:30 p.m. concerts, usually featuring a split bill with two artists/acts, will be preceded by open mics at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be $7 for Cinema Arts Centre and Folk Music Society of Huntington members; $10 for nonmembers.

Each Sunday the museum offers a 1:00 p.m. docent-led family walk-through of the exhibition and, beginning at 1:30 p.m., supervised art activities for the whole family. Special family guides of the main exhibition are available in the galleries. Family Sunday at the Museum is free with museum admission. Weekend parking fee is $2 (members free). Family Sunday is held in the museum’s main building, the Arnold & Joan Saltzman Fine Art Building.
