Avalon Great Neck held a lottery drawing at Great Neck Village Hall on Monday night for 20 workforce-housing units, potentially opening the way for some families with moderate incomes to live in the village.
A one-bedroom apartment with Avalon would normally cost $2,810 per month, a two-bedroom would start at $3,425 per month, and three-bedroom prices start at $5,200, according to the Avalon Great Neck website. The starting rental price for a lottery unit was $1,593.
There were 89 applications for these units, which were a mixture of one-, two-, and three- bedroom apartments overlooking Manhasset Bay. The community will feature landscaped courtyards, a heated pool, residential lounge and a fitness center.
“Our goal was to create a rental community that set a standard for all future luxury rental communities on Long Island and we believe we’ve met that mark,” Christopher Capace, AvalonBay senior development director, said in a news release.
The Long Island Housing Partnership will now evaluate the first 20 drawn applications to see if the applicants’ household income qualifies for housing. Should someone not qualify, the group will move down the list of applicants until all the apartments are filled.
The first residents are expected to move there in May.
“I think it’s a perfect private-public partnership between Great Neck Village, Avalon and the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP),” said James Britz, executive vice president of the housing group, which helped oversee the drawing and project.
