Baxter House neighbor says she saw men entering and leaving house

The owner of the house adjacent to the historic Baxter House said suspicious men were entering and leaving the house Tuesday night and one looked into her bathroom window while she was showering and urinated on the grass in front of her.

Laura Friedland Stulbaum, who lives on Ridgeway Road, said she saw a man waving to her while she was showering around 11:30 p.m.

Stulbaum said the man then urinated on the grass of the Baxter House, at 12 Shore Road, and then walked back to the house and entered it.

Stulbaum said an hour later she saw another man walk around the house and then enter and lock the door.

The Port Washington Police Department said officers checked the house around 11:40 p.m. and the door was locked and no one was found.

Stulbaum said she believes the second man locked himself inside.

“My kids couldn’t sleep last night,” Stulbaum said. “It was frightening for them and for me.”

Stulbaum described the first man who urinated on the grass as a heavy-set black man, carrying a lot of backpacks and wearing multiple jackets.

Stulbaum said she has seen this man around the neighborhood about six times since she moved into the house three weeks ago.

She has also seen men entering the Baxter House before, she said.

The second man was thinner and had a couple of jackets on, too, she said.

The police investigated a complaint that the home’s front door was open Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., authorities said.

“We trust the Police Department will handle the matter to keep our residents safe,” Baxter Eststes Village Clerk Chrissy Kiernan.

Kiernan said she and the Mayor Nora Haagenson were in touch with Stulbaum.

The owner of the Baxter House, Sabrina Wu, who does not live in the historic house, which was built in 1790, has drawn controversy because she submitted plans to demolish and rebuild the home.

Wu’s lawyer, Thomas Levin, could not be reached for comment.
