When Dr. Diana Pop-Cupsa emigrated from Romania in 1990, she said, her family was in search of the American Dream.

The daughter of two dentists, Pop-Cupsa of North Hills came to the United States when she was 16 and landed in East Meadow shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

After two years of high school, Pop-Cupsa attended Stony Brook University, earning both her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and her doctorate in general dentistry.

Now, Pop-Cupsa is one of two dentists working out of the Bella Smiles office at 1405 Old Northern Blvd. in the historic Village of Roslyn.

The other dentist, Dr. Salvatore Lotardo, also operates out of the company’s Riverhead office, but Pop-Cupsa stays in the Roslyn location, giving her the ability to address dental emergencies quickly after business hours and on weekends.

Located in a former house built in 1695, Pop-Cupsa said she and Lotardo offer a wide range of general, restorative, cosmetic and orthodontic work at Bella Smiles’ second location.

“We offer everything from basic cleanings and exams to full mouth reconstruction and implants, and very rarely do we have to refer patients elsewhere,” Pop-Cupsa said. “What sets us apart is Dr. Lotardo is one of only three accredited cosmetic dentists by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry in Nassau County. That’s very hard to obtain.”

Pop-Cupsa is trained and certified by the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and said her skills mesh well with Lotardo’s.

“I work in conjunction with him and spend a little more time mostly on the lower third of the face, which is where we age the most,” Pop-Cupsa said. “Between the two of us, we encompass everything within the cosmetic field.”

Pop-Cupsa said the office is equipped with a panoramic X-ray machine, a rarity in a general dentist’s office, as well as both Zoom and GLO whitening equipment. Though they offer both in-office and at-home treatments, Pop-Cupsa said the treatment is most effective with an initial office treatment with home follow-ups.

Lotardo, she said, is also certified to do both traditional and Invisalign braces as well as implants.

Pop-Cupsa also said she is working on adding a CEREC device to the office, which allows patients to get one-day crowns instead of a temporary crown while an off-site lab designs and ships the final product weeks after the initial visit.

Thanks to her proximity to the office, Pop-Cupsa said, she is able to provide “concierge service” to her patients, including night and weekend emergency work.

“I can run into the office and fix someone’s tooth before a wedding or a big party because it’s always Saturday night when emergencies happen,” Pop-Cupsa said. “To be able to live and work here, it’s definitely the American dream.”
