Caviar for the wealthy, crumbs for the poor

The Island Now

Recently I heard a very apt characterization of what some of our electorate, the very wealthy, think is the way to go. “Caviar for the wealthy, crumbs on the table for the poor.”

So many of the electorate are being fooled also by those who want limited or small government. Those who want limited government do not want regulations to prevent the unethical and immoral practices that have ravaged the economy. Without sufficient regulations we have increasing air pollution, serious destruction to the environment, lower wages and benefits for the middle class, reduced compassionate care for the least among us.

Only government can build bridges, roads, schools that we all need and small government advocates will not appropriate the money needed.

This is a huge, varied country and we cannot exist if we go back to the origins of this nation.  Our founders were a much more homogeneous group; we had a agricultural and hunting economy with a boundless wilderness to move

to when things did not work out. The Industrial Revolution had not yet begun.

Nostalgia is comforting because solutions to our current situation are difficult. In order to progress, new rules have to be written, and the funds to build infrastructure must be found.

To long for past solutions is to create disorganization and chaos.
