The Village of East Williston Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday to award the village’s garbage pickup contract to Meadow Carting, marking a change in service providers.

In February, the board received three bids from Meadow Carting, Dejana Industries and Daniel Finley Allen & Co. Inc. and found that Meadow Carting, a Westbury-based company that serves other villages and the Town of North Hempstead, was the best choice and the lowest bidder.

“Meadow Carting appears to be the apparent low bidder,” Village Clerk Marie Hausner said. “They are a responsible bidder and we have used them in the past.”

Meadow Carting placed a bid for $338,490 in February, $3,500 lower than the village’s current pickup service, Dejana Industries, a company based in the Village of Manorhaven.

Meadow Carting’s pickup service will include three-day-a-week backdoor garbage pickup. The company also provides garbage pickup in four Port Washington villages — Manorhaven, Baxter Estates, Flower Hill and Port Washington North — as well as other municipalities in Nassau County.

As previously reported in April, Meadow Carting and more than 65 employees struck a deal for a new contract after a three-day strike that disrupted garbage collection across the North Shore.

During the strike, workers demanded a $1 per hour raise and that Meadow to pay a larger portion of workers’ health benefits. According to village officials and workers, Meadow Carting hired nonunion workers to continue garbage pickup to solve collection disruptions in the North Shore.

The East Williston village board has met with the carter to have a seamless transfer of companies, officials said. The board also plans to invite the owner and president of Meadow Carting to their monthly June meeting, where residents can discuss any problems or concerns they may have.
