A vehicle was engulfed in flames at the Mobil gas station at the corner of Northern Boulevard and Glen Cove Road early Thursday.

The station’s fire suppression system went off and no one was injured, said a station employee who identified himself as the manager but declined to disclose his name. but the vehicle was completely destroyed.

Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder got the call at 5:47 a.m., said the company’s second assistant chief Ronald E. Collura Jr.

Once he arrived, he said, he alerted Roslyn Highlands Fire Department to dispatch as well.

The companies worked quickly to extinguish the fire, which did not spread to the station’s awning, Collura said.

“We are thankful to God that nobody got hurt,” the station employee said.

The vehicle’s owner knew there were problems with the truck, which was decades old, he said.

“He prepaid inside, and when he went outside he saw the smoke, so he opened up the hood and then the flames came,” the employee said.

The pump station and some cameras sustained damage, he said. The whole station had to be shut down because the fire suppression system went off.

“You need a lot of heat for that to happen,” Collura said.

The station will be closed until the fire department inspects it and provides the go-ahead to reopen, the station employee said.

“Hopefully we’ll be pumping soon,” he added.

It is fairly common for Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder to respond to incidents of enflamed cars, Collura said.

“We operate on the Long Island Expressway as well as the Northern State Parkway…so it’s more frequent than you think,” he said.
