Fix, don’t expand G.N. library

The Island Now

To Town of North Hempstead

For many years, I have been well aware that our G.N. Library, built about 1970 needed to be improved by renovation. It is not a secret that there have been disagreements among our patrons, as to the extent of such work.

I had been involved in the building industry for over 40 years and I have knowledge concerning costs. Suggestions were made at one time to increase our 46,000 square feet building by 23,000 square feet, which is equal to 50 percent.

Later there was a suggestion to increase it by 15,000 square feet. Now it is down to 9,000 square feet. When a building is increased by one foot the cost becomes very, very, very much higher than keeping it on the same footprint.

With this economy, it seems most important to renovate as much as necessary, within the same footprint.

I personally am for such a renovation which will be less costly, take much less time and have less inconvenience for our patrons.

Please enter my letter into the official hearing record for Tuesday, June 14, 2011 Town Board records.
