GN officials ignore loitering probelm

The Island Now

Last week, in this publication, a letter about the traffic congestion on Welwyn Road in front of Shop Delight brought to my mind another situation I noticed with regularity at South Station Plaza.

Specifically, over the past year there has been a growing number of individuals hanging out in front of the convenience store just off Middle Neck Road.

They are littering the sidewalk with cigarette butts and trash and drinking liquor which I personally witnessed.  At the risk of not being politically correct, I must say they are all Hispanic.

Since much off this occurs during the day, I can only assume they are unfortunately unemployed.

I have also witnessed in the waiting area of the train station Hispanic men sharing whiskey out of a bottle into paper cups.  This is not intended to cast disparity against all Hispanics but the simple fact is that this is the reality.

So now the question is why is this happening and why is nothing being done about it?

In a supposed upscale community like Great Neck, where record prices are paid for homes and quality of life is espoused it would seem there should be more concern and monitoring of this growing problem.

What are (Village of Great Neck Plaza) Mayor Jean Celender and other town officials doing?  It appears they are doing nothing.

In my lifetime I have personally experienced how these situations slowly eat away at a community and before you know it, its too late to do anything about it.

In my almost 30 years living in Great Neck, I have seen what I can only call dramatic changes in the community in ways to numerous to mention except to say that most of these changes have not been positive.
