Police arrested a Great Neck man for aggravated driving while intoxicated in Manhasset on Sunday night, charging him under Leandra’s Law.

Police said that Spruce Street resident Jose Castillo, 33, was driving a 2001 Hyundai Elantra northbound on Plandome Road by George Street while intoxicated with his nine-year-old son in the back seat. Castillo was then placed under arrest at the scene.

The child was released to his mother, police said.

Leandra’s Law, also known as the Child Passenger Protection Act, automatically makes it a felony for anyone to drive drunk with someone age 15 or younger in the vehicle.

Castillo is being charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, endangering the welfare of a child, driving while intoxicated, driving while alcohol impaired, the unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and other charges.

He will be arraigned on Monday, Oct. 9, in the First District Court in Hempstead.
