Hazing letter a public service

The Island Now

I am writing a letter in response to the letter published in the May 6, 2011, issue of the New Hyde Park Herald Courier. The letter was written by Elizabeth (Liz) Berney of Great Neck.

As an out-of-state reader, I want to offer my thanks to Elizabeth (Liz) Berney, for the letter she wrote concerning the Cornell fraternity hazing death. Her beautifully written letter offers an extremely important message. I agree that parents should discuss the side effects of alcohol use, as well as the necessity to seek prompt medical attention for someone who has consumed dangerous amounts of it.

I applaud the efforts you offered, so many years ago, to be an important part of saving a fellow college student’s life, following his overconsumption of alcohol.

Thank you for your message that we need to recognize that different people are more susceptible to certain substances than are other people.

Thanks for taking the time to remind us to become pro-active in our efforts.
