Herricks allergy policy nothing to sneeze at

The Herricks School District has plans to implement a policy in this fall to deal with issues of food allergies that affect children attending all district schools.

At a recent Herricks Board of Education meeting, Herricks Superintendent of Schools John Bierwirth said the district administration has a policy in draft form that it plans to circulate to the PTAs throughout the district. After soliciting comments from the PTAs, Bierwirth said the administration will make a formal recommendation to the school board in September.

“There are a lot of people with strong opinions,” Bierwirth said. “Clearly it is something we need to respond to as a school board and as a community.”

Bierwirth addressed the subject in response to a question from a parent of a child who suffers from an acute food allergy.

Herricks School Board President Christine Turner suggested that a group might be formed of parents who have children with food allergies in the school district. She said the group might be best equipped to address questions that new parents in the district  with children suffering from food allergies would have.
