The owners of bars and restaurants in Huntington are seeking to open a burger and bar spot in New Hyde Park.
The three partners presented a plan to make changes to a closed bar, the Hyde Away Pub located at 29 Jericho Turnpike, during Tuesday’s village board meeting.
The board adjourned the hearing and its decision.
The partners, Sal Mignano and Bill Oxios, own or manage bars on Long Island.
Mignano is the owner of Vauxhall and Radio/Radio in Huntington. Sipp owns Rust and Gold in Huntington. Oxios is the bar manager of the Leaky Lifeboat in Seaford.
Mignano said the men sought out the village because there was nothing like what they’re seeking to open in the area. It is also far enough away that it won’t take business away from their other establishments, he said.
If approved, the men plan to open an elevated burger joint and bar, with varied craft beers available, he said.
The partners aren’t sure of exact hours of operation, but plan to be open for both lunch and dinner hours if possible, Mignano said.
As for closing times, Mignano said he “usually feels it out,” and closes when the crowd trickles out. That’s likely around 2 a.m. on weekends and earlier on weekdays, he said.
There won’t be live entertainment, but maybe a jukebox or pool table, Mignano said.
The restaurant will have about 30 table seats, and fit about 75 people total with space at the bar, Sipp said.
During the meeting, the board also announced that there will be a public hearing on Sept. 13 with the Metropolitan Transit Authority and 3TC, the design-build firm hired by the MTA, to discuss the Third Track Project, which is adding a Long Island Rail Road track between Floral Park and Hicksville.
Mayor Lawrence Montreuil also told residents that once renovated, the new station will likely fit the Colonial aesthetic the village wanted.
The village is looking to renovate the area by the station into a revitalized downtown area. Montreuil said the village hopes to create it in a Colonial style similar to Alexandria, Virginia.
Although he has not yet seen updated renderings of the New Hyde Park station, set to be renovated in 2020, he saw a rendering of the Merillon Avenue station, he said. The station rendering had bricks and slanted roofs, he said.
The Long Island Rail Road wants the stations to be uniform and the style may also be used at New Hyde Park, he said.
In unrelated business, a resident asked the board to address the noise from low-flying planes.
Montreuil said the village is in the flight path of a runway John F. Kennedy International Airport uses frequently. Flight patterns are controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration, he said.
Montreuil said the village has sent a letter to U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice, and told residents they are welcome to reach out to Rice, and Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well.
