The owners of a three-acre beachfront estate in Sands Point designed by a world-famous architect are asking $18 million for the property, according to Realtor.com.

The property at 27 Astor Lane was originally a retreat for Catholic nuns. Real estate magnate Richard Maidman of the Townhouse Management Co. purchased the property  from the Archdiocese of Brooklyn for a weekend retreat. Maidman later hired famed architect Richard Meier to design the main house.

Meier, best known for designing the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, California, and the Getty Center in Los Angeles, created the designs for the structure dubbed the Maidman House, which has five bedrooms, six full bathrooms and one half-bath.

Other than the main house, features of the property include 200 feet of direct beachfront, a guesthouse, a cottage with two separate apartments with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a studio, a seven-car garage, terraced gardens, a tool shed, an ice house and a tennis court. The property is adjacent to the Village Club of Sands Point, which features an 18-hole golf course.

Following Maidman’s death in 2017, his family’s trust Steamboat Landing retained ownership of the property. Currently, the Maidman House is listed by Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, and is represented by Bonnie Doran of the company’s Manhasset and Port Washington offices.
