The landmark 2013 season for Manhasset High School varsity girls lacrosse team came to a close this past Friday when the Indians fell to Brighton, 9-8, at SUNY-Cortland in the state semifinals.

Manhasset, which moved up from Class ‘C’ in 2011, captured the school’s first Nassau Class B championship the previous week with a 14-8 win over the Garden City Trojans. Garden City had won the previous seven.

“I think the girls did a great job,” said head coach Danielle Gallagher. “We have a pretty young team. This season I think they accomplished a tremendous amount.”

Against Brighton, Penn-bound senior Sarah Barcia scored twice, while Lindsey Rombeck, Sara Phillips, Natalie Stefan, Julia Glynn, Maddy Molinari and Jacklyn D’Alleva all added a goal apiece. Erin Berry had one assist.

The Indians finished the season with a 16-4 record and first championship since the 2005 Class ‘C’ crown, but Gallagher insisted the team was better than their final tallies of wins and losses indicated.

“We don’t have an easy schedule,” Gallagher said.  “I’d rather schedule a really fought schedule throughput the year.”

Two of the team’s four defeats came against nationally-ranked opponents St. Anthony’s and St. Stephen & St. Agnes. The team also fell to Garden City in overtime during regular-season play.

With many key players returning Gallagher and assistant coach Meghan Clarke are hopeful success will continue in 2014.
