During a brief work session last Thursday, the Manorhaven Board of Trustees took up some of the overcrowding problems in Port Washington’s most densely populated community.

At the top of the list was overcrowding in houses.

“Overcrowding is a problem and it’s worse when so many people are in a house illegally,” said Deputy Village Clerk Donald Badaczewski. “We’re passing a new law that will make this easier to crack down on.”

The village is also seeking to make parking easier for residents. With winter approaching, the Board of Trustees wants to make winter parking easier.

Currently, parked cars must be removed from one side of the street every other day so that the street can be plowed. Last year the board reduced the time the winter parking law was in place, from Dec. 1 – March 31 to Dec. 15 – March 15. The board will revisit this issue in the coming months and will look for public comment.

Manorhaven is also considering a couple of laws regarding smoking. Under new laws, the age limit to purchase cigarettes would be increased to 21 years and vape stores would be prohibited. These laws would be presented to the board in October.

After discussion of the proposed laws, focus turned to several Manorhaven projects. There was a brief discussion of the old Thypin Steel property. The waterfront analysis has not yet been completed, and the moratorium on waterfront development, which affects the Thypin Steel property and has been extended several times, expires in December.

The village is preparing to accept bids for underground electrical and plumbing work at Morgan’s Dock, the old ferry pier which is being turned into a park. The project is expected to be finished by the fall of 2018.

Trustee John Popeleski gave an update on efforts to clean out the Manorhaven Preserve and look into making electricity and water accessible in the preserve. Popeleski admitted it was slow going.

“We don’t have the money of Port North,” he said.
