The skate park at Manorhaven Beach Park has been closed until further notice, according to the Town of North Hempstead, which governs and keeps up the park.
The move came just days after county, town, and village representatives signed a letter warning the Port community that the area could become the next cluster center.
Located on the north side of Manorhaven Beach Park, the park, which has ramps and is accessible to skateboards, rollerbladers, scooters, and bicycles, is often popular with pre-teens and teens, who are said to have gathered there over the summer.
Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte said at a community forum over Zoom on Tuesday night that the skate park had been closed due to people gathering there without obeying COVID-19 protocols.
“Unfortunately, our circumstances this year requires each of us to wrestle with some difficult decisions and to make some sacrifices,” Dalimonte said. “There were reports of large groups congregating there without masks and not practicing social distancing. The town will continue to monitor the spread of COVID-19 locally and will reopen the skate park as soon as it is feasible.”
