East Williston Mayor David Tanner was appointed to the New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials’ Finance Policy Committee, the group recently announced.

As a member of the committee Tanner will provide policy recommendations to the executive committee, develop positions on various pieces of legislation and consider new legislative proposals that will benefit cities and villages, according to a news release.

The committee will focus on a wide range of issues, including municipal budgets and taxation, real property taxes, tax exemptions, revenue options, state aid, state mandates and infrastructure funding.

There are about seven members in the committee, Tanner said.

Tanner added that he feels complimented that the conference thought well enough of his skills to include him in the committee.

“As a long time serving village official they’ve gotten to know me as an official and as a person over the years,” Tanner said. “I’ve been involved in attending difference conferences as well as meeting the other NYCOM members.”

Tanner said he’s finishing up his seventh year as mayor and was a trustee for 13 years before that.

The appointment came from New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials President James Miccio, who is also the mayor of the Village of Fishkill.

Miccio said Tanner will be a “tremendous asset to this process.”

“Mayor Tanner is a strong and outspoken supporter of local government,” Miccio said in the release. “We are pleased to have him involved with NYCOM in this important undertaking which will only strengthen out organization’s advocacy efforts.”

The conference, which began in 1910, represents city and village governments across the state and has 576 members.

In addition to his new appointment with the conference of mayors, Tanner is a member of the Nassau County Village Officials Association’s executive board.
