Melissa Etheridge to play Westbury

The Island Now

Melissa Etheridge will appear at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Friday, July 12 at 8 p.m.

The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist is known for her signature raspy, smoky vocal sound, confessional lyrics and pop-based folk rock.  Etheridge’s hits include “I’m The Only One” and “Come To My Window” – from her breakthrough recording, Yes I Am, which spent 138 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts and went on to sell over 6,000,000 copies in the U.S. – and “If I Wanted To,” and “Your Little Secret.”

Among Etheridge’s numerous honors are two Grammy Awards (for “Come To My Window” in 1995 and “Ain’t It Heavy” in 1993) and an additional 13 Grammy Award nominations, in addition to an Academy Award win in 2007 for Best Original Song (“I Need To Wake Up”) from the documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Etheridge also won International Entertainer of the Year at the 20th Annual Juno Awards in 1990, was awarded ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year Award in 1996 and in 2001, she won the Gibson Guitar Award for Best Rock Guitarist:  Female.  She received the honor of having her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011.

“The Walk of Fame, the Women’s Museum, the milestones, they made me go, ‘I did it!’” she says. “And I’m still doing it. I feel I’m at the peak of it. It’s all I know how to do, so glad I get to keep doing it!”

Etheridge’s current album, “4th Street Feeling,” has been receiving rave reviews and is available now.
