Mineola will celebrate its Portuguese community with a carnival and parade this weekend filled with Portuguese culture.

The Mineola Portuguese Feast and Carnival will be held from Friday through Sunday.

The celebration will culminate with the Portugal Day Parade on Sunday.

The parade steps off at 11 a.m., starting near Memorial Park.

It will proceed along Jericho Turnpike, turning south and ending at the Union Street entrance to Wilson Park.

Fernando Frade, president of the Mineola Portuguese Center, said in a previous interview that the parade and carnival bring members of the Portuguese community back to their roots.

It is just one way the organization, which has been around since the 1930s, has worked to keep Portuguese culture alive in the community, Frade said.

In addition to the parade, the weekend festival features Portuguese food and entertainment.

Antonio Saraiva, an Albertson resident, helps organize the carnival portion of the weekend festivities.

The carnival will have wine, beer, soda and rides, Saraiva said.

The carnival will be open Friday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
