National Grid’s construction team is working on Roslyn Road during the day as part of a multimillion-dollar gas main project in northwest Nassau, a company spokesperson said.
Construction between East Williston Avenue and Locust Lane will continue for months, and commuters, but not commercial drivers, may continue to use the road, said the spokesperson, Wendy Ladd.
Roadwork will generally occur between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., she said.
“This is going to be going on for a while,” Ladd said. “We don’t have an end date as of yet. There’s a lot of work to be done.”
Roslyn Road commuters should designate extra time for their commute or find an alternate route, Ladd said, and drivers should proceed slowly through the construction site.
In addition to Roslyn Road, traffic is being affected on Red Ground Road and Locust Lane, the latter of which will only allow local traffic between Woodhollow Road and Corn Crib Lane.
For both roads, construction will take place during the day.
National Grid is the largest natural gas provider in the northeastern U.S. and has 1.8 million customers in New York City and Long Island, said company spokesperson Domenick Graziani.
This project began in June 2017 and is intended to have three phases, he said.
“We’re installing new gas mains and transition lines so that we can support the system,” Ladd said. “It’s really to get more gas out onto the island.”
Once complete, the project will have installed six miles of gas mains and two regulator stations, one in Roslyn Heights and the other in the Village of Old Westbury.
The project’s first phase, which involved the installation of 1.8 miles of pipelines, was completed in May.
The second phase, which is underway, began in the fall. The two regulator stations were planned to be completed by the end of 2018, but are still in the final work stages, Graziani said.
