The Town of North Hempstead is seeking proposals for continuing the Hempstead Harbor Shoreline Trail’s expansion in Port Washington.

The town hopes to complete phases three and four of a trail extension project along the western shore of Hempstead Harbor, according to the 2018 capital plan, which would extend the trail by 1,750 feet. About $1 million is currently allocated for the project for fiscal 2019.

The town’s request seeks a firm to review the scope of the project, prepare design and bid documents, provide cost estimates and evaluate bid proposals for the project’s construction.

That eventual project would include removing debris, cutting and filling for a pathway, constructing “viewing structures,” and creating the trail itself in varying, 6-to-8-foot widths, according to the proposal document.

Hempstead Harbor Shoreline Trail started as a quarter-mile-long venture, but underwent a mile-long expansion in 2015. The 1.25-mile trail now begins at North Hempstead Beach Park and goes down West Shore Road.

Town spokeswoman Rebecca Cheng said the town plans to use a $450,000 grant from New York State Parks, which will be matched with $450,000 of its own money, for design and construction.

It is unclear when it would be completed.

Cheng also said this is separate from the town’s North Hempstead Beach Park Visioning project, a plan seeking to revitalize the park and 200 acres of nearby woodland.
