Village of North Hills Trustee Gerard Cohen died suddenly on Wednesday night of an apparent heart attack. He was 67 years old.

Village of North Hills Mayor Marvin Natiss said Cohen collapsed as he was leaving his office on Wednesday and was taken to Winthrop University Hospital.

Cohen had just won re-election to his position on the North Hills Board of Trustees on Tuesday.

“He was a really wonderful guy and I was really happy that he was re-elected,” Natiss said. “He was very concerned with the community and community affairs. We’ve lost a good trustee.”

Natiss had appointed Cohen as the North Hills representative on the boards of the North Shore Cable Commissions and Public Access TV.

In addition to his position on the North Hills Village Board, Cohen was vice president of the Links Homeowners Association and a member of the New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce.

Cohen owned and operated Storage 1-2-3, Inc., a self-storage facility, and a file and record storage facility, in New Hyde Park.

Cohen served on the Acorn Ponds Condo III Board for 11 years starting in 1995 and was the chairperson of the board’s maintenance committee during that time.

He was also a representative to the Acorn Ponds Homeowners Association, was chairperson of the homeowners telecommunications committee and also served on the roadway reconstruction project committee and several other committees.

Cohen lived in North Hills with his wife, Gail, since 1991.

Information was not immediately available about funeral services.
