North Shore-LIJ Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Dowling was ranked 25th in Modern Healthcare magazine’s annual listing of the nation’s “Top 100 Healthcare Leaders,” published last week.

Dowling was the top-ranked hospital executive in the New York area and moved up 13 slots from his 38th place ranking last year.

It is his seventh consecutive appearance and highest ranking on the annual list. Topping Modern Healthcare’s “most powerful” list were: Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. John Kitzhaber, governor of Oregon, and President Obama.

Dowling has been North Shore-LIJ’s president and CEO since January 2002, after having served as the health system’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. Before joining North Shore-LIJ in 1995, he served in New York state government for 12 years, including seven years as state director of Health, Education and Human Services and deputy secretary to the governor. He was also commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services.

Dowling was also a recipient of the 2011 Chief Executive Officer Information Technology Award, co-sponsored by the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society and Modern Healthcare magazine. He was one of three CEOs to win the national award.
