Nurse and educator Irene Macyk has been named the new chief nursing officer for North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Northwell Health announced this week.

Macyk, who most recently served as associate executive director and chief nursing officer at Northwell Health’s Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, and the system’s eye, ear and throat satellite in Greenwich Village, had originally been hired in February, but the COVID-19 pandemic put the announcement and move on hold until July.

The appointment will mark a return of sorts for Macyk, who previously served as senior administrative director of patient care services at North Shore Hospital.

Responsibilities included oversight for over 500 beds and a $50 million budget encompassing medicine, surgery and maternal child services.

“We’re excited to have Irene back at North Shore University Hospital, where she previously did such amazing work and forged strong relationships with the staff,” said Jon Sendach, executive director at the hospital. “Irene has provided senior-level strategic oversight of the nursing care at several Northwell Health hospitals and we’re looking forward to her bringing that expertise here.”

Macyk earned her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and a Ph.D. in nursing from Adelphi University, and began her nursing career at Northwell’s Nassau County Medical Center, then worked at Huntington Hospital and Stony Brook University Hospital. She rejoined the system in 2006, overseeing nursing education at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park.

In her time at Stony Brook University Hospital, Macyk worked as the school’s magnet program coordinator and assistant professor and adjunct clinical faculty.

Additionally, she has presented her work across the country and holds numerous professional affiliations, such as Sigma Theta Tau, the Association of Nurse Leaders and the American Nurses Association. She has received the New York Organization of Nurse Executives and Leaders’ (NYONE) Innovation Award, the New York State Nurses Association’s Excellence in Nursing Education Award and several awards from the Northwell system.

Macyk succeeds Kerri Scanlon, a nurse who left North Shore Hospital to assume the role of executive director at Glen Cove Hospital.
