Path to repeat starts on the road for Adelphi Lacrosse

The Island Now

The defending Northeast-10 conference champion Adelphi University men’s Lacrosse team will open the 2016 season with four road games before hosting a game at Motamed Field in mid-March.

The Panthers will begin their quest for a third straight NE-10 championship, fourth in the last seven years, in sunny Florida as they are slated to face the University of Tampa and Florida Southern College in late February. This comes just before a non-conference Long Island rival as they come back to New York to face LIU Post in Brookville. The Brown and Gold will continue their journey on the road as they head to Springfield, Mass. to face American International College in their first conference contest of the season.

Local students and fans will be able to see the team play on Saturday, March 12 at 1 pm as they host the College of Saint Rose in their home opener. This will be short lived as two more road games follow in what will be a mileage year for the Panthers, featuring just five home games in their 15-game schedule.

After coming back home to face Saint Michael’s, the Panthers will travel to Merrimack College to face the squad they defeated in the 2014 NE-10 championship game and fell to in last year’s NCAA Tournament. This precedes the longest stretch of home games for this squad, and only time they will be home twice in the same week, as they host Saint Anslem (April 6) and Franklin Pierce (April 9) in back-to-back games at Motamed Field.

The Brown and Gold finish the home portion of 2016 against Bentley on Saturday, April 16 at 11 am followed by two tough road contests. Adelphi is set to face New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury before traveling to Syracuse to play face Le Moyne in a rematch of last year’s NE-10 Title game.

Head Coach Gordon Purdie is entering his ninth season at the helm for these Panthers, owning a 95-32 record. Returning seniors Salvatore Tuttle and John English look to lead this squad to a familiar place, atop the Northeast-10 conference and back to the NCAA Division II tournament.
