Plandome Heights amends building code

The Plandome Heights Board of Trustees Monday amended the its village code to remove patios, walkways and driveways from what had previously been considered building area.

According to the amendment, residents may use 25 percent of a property as building area and use an additional 20 percent for paved walkways and driveways, but now cannot exceed a combined 45 percent of the total property.

Also settled in the amendment was the removal of a restriction limiting a driveway opening to 10 feet in width.

“The restricted driveway is probably more needed in Queens than here where people need room to park cars,” said Village of Plandome Heights Mayor Ken Riscica.

Riscica also announced at the meeting that he had spoken with Nassau County Legislator Richard Nicolello in early June about the start of the paving project along the 1900-foot stretch of the section of Plandome Road located within the village.

Riscica said the tentative start date to the project would be July 8 but it was unclear in his discussion with Nicolello whether work would begin on that date or if equipment would be moved to the work site.

The board also introduced its new Clerk/Treasurer, Arlene Drucker, and announced the appointment of Elizabeth Vera as its deputy clerk for buildings, a position created because of the volume of building applications the village had recently received, officials said.

Riscica said he planned to appoint Drucker as a liaison to state Secretary Cesar A. Perales, as mandated by the Uniform Notice of Claims Act, which makes the Secretary of State the recipient of claims against a municipality.
