Planned Parenthood services help improve women’s health

The Island Now

Planned Parenthood of Nassau County and its sister organizations throughout the nation are highly respected health care centers that communities rely on for preventive and primary care – a stark contrast to the defamatory description of Planned Parenthood put forth in a recent letter to the editor from Anne Reiser of East Williston.

Rather than repeat and refute each untruth in that April letter, including the absurd statement linking abortion and breast cancer (no link has been found by the World Health Organization, American Cancer Society, or the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, among other groups), we will share the facts about Planned Parenthood with your readers.

In doing so, we also extend our deepest appreciation to Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy for her unwavering support of Planned Parenthood, particularly in the face of recent attacks on women’s health care in Congress.

Planned Parenthood of Nassau County operates three health centers serving over 13,000 patients annually. In 2010, PPNC health care providers performed 5,121 breast exams, 21,027 tests for sexually transmitted infections, 22,059 birth control counseling and services, 5,051 Pap tests and much more.

They also provided comprehensive, age appropriate, medically accurate sex education and outreach initiatives to approximately 28,000 individuals, community groups and classes of students at area schools.

Planned Parenthood Nassau County has served this community for 78 years and, nationally, Planned Parenthood has served millions of women, men and families for 95 years. Planned Parenthood has a strong reputation as a trusted health care provider to millions of women for nearly a century. Planned Parenthood’s reputation cannot be tainted by anti-choice ramblings.

Planned Parenthood Nassau County invites any interested member of the community to seek health care at one of their centers. They will experience the comprehensive, compassionate care Planned Parenthood patients receive from health care providers who care deeply about the health and wellbeing of their patients.

Thank you Planned Parenthood of Nassau County and Congresswoman McCarthy for your ongoing service to our community.
