Nassau County Police released a sketch of one of two men they said attempted to kidnap two 8-year-old girls in a Mineola yard on Tuesday at 4:40 p.m.

The alleged attempted kidnapper in the sketch is described as being white or hispanic, aged 40 to 45 and about 5 feet, 5 inches tall. He’s described as having a thin build, black short, straight hair, dark eyes and a long brown beard lighter than his hair.

Both subjects are said to have been wearing yellow pants and blue shirts at the time of the incident. Police believe it may be some form of uniform, Detective Lt. Richard Lebrun said at a news conference Wednesday.

The girls were approached by the unknown men while playing in a yard on Maple Place.

The men asked the girls their names and if they wanted to go for a ride in their vehicle, Lebrun said.

One of the men pushed one girl to the ground, struck her face causing pain, police said. The girl screamed and the men fled, one of foot and one in a dark colored car, police said.

The other girl was not injured, police said.

The girls told their parents who called 911, police said.

Based on interviews with the girls, detectives believe it to be a credible incident, Lebrun said, and will continue investigating.

There has not been another attempted abduction in the Mineola area recently, Lebrun said.

Police request anyone with information about the crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
