A Port Washington Police Officer suffered a serious leg injury on Saturday after being involved in an accident while riding a department motorcycle, police said.

Port Washington Police Chief James Salerno said the officer, who the department declined to identify, was hospitalized in serious condition.

Police did not provide a specific location for the accident, but residents said it occurred on Port Washington Boulevard near North Hempstead Country Club.

The officer was escorting an ambulance to the hospital, said Brian Waterson, chief of the Port Washington Fire Department.

Waterson said the officer was transported to the hospital by a Nassau County Police Ambulance.

Both the fire department and police department declined to provide further details.
