A small fire broke out at a senior living facility in Port Washington on Monday, forcing resident on one floor to evacuate the building.

The Port Washington Fire Department arrived at the Amsterdam at Harborside, located at 300 E Overlook, shortly after 4 p.m.

“It was a fire in one apartment on the sixth floor,”said PWFD Chief Bryan Vogeley. “Once we were on scene, within ten minutes we had water on the fire.”

Vogeley said the fire was held in check by the sprinkler system within the apartment. With the flames brought quickly under control, residents were back in the building by 9 p.m.

The one exception was the man who lived in the apartment affected by the fire. He was sent to a local hospital for smoke inhalation and was the only injury as a result of the fire. Vogeley did not have an update on the man’s condition as of Thursday.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown but is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.
