Renovated library media center opens

Manhasset School District officials hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony prior to Thursday’s Board of Education meeting to commemorate the opening of the high school’s renovated library media center.

The project was made possible by funding from the Manhasset Tower Foundation, a local non-profit organization that raises money it donates as annual gifts to the school district.

Prior to the ribbon cutting, Manhasset Board of Education President Regina Rule thanked the Tower Foundation members in attendance for their work in renovating the library into a state-of-the-art media center that has become a hot spot for students, both prior to the morning bell and after last period ends.

“This project suits your mission like no other,” Rule said. “Thanks to your partnership, your vision, your generosity and ongoing support, our students’ school days are far richer and our public schools will continue to be a beacon of excellence for years to come.”

The new library media center, whose renovations took two phases to complete, now features high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access in addition to increased classroom space for more interactive lectures, Tower officials said.

Manhasset Librarian Ed Vasta said he’s seen an increase in the number of students who regularly visit the library.

“There’s the saying, if you build it, will they come? Well, yes they will, but what will they do when they get here?” Vasta said. “With this completion, there has been a complete redesign of the way they approach learning here.”
