After months of negotiation, the Village of Sands Point and the Sands Point Police Benevolent Association have agreed on a contract.

“This one took a little longer to come to fruition but the work was completed and the contract has come in signed from the head of the PBA,” Sands Point Mayor Edward Adler said.

This contract will last five years, from June 1, 2017, to May 31, 2022. Base salaries will increase by an average of 2.9 percent a year over the course of the contract.

According to the Empire Center for Public Policy, a nonprofit think tank, the average annual pay for the Sands Point police in 2017 was $165,684.

The trustees decided to not to opt into a program for paid family leave. The 12 village employees and 18 members of the Police Department will have to use a sick day or vacation day to care for an ill family member. This does not affect maternity leave.

The Board of Trustees approved the payment of bills, the extension of 22 building permits and the 2017 Thanksgiving Day Run, which will be held on Nov. 23.

A report from the trustee’s Finance and Treasury Commissioner Peter Forman showed the village’s finances were in good standing, and membership to the village’s golf course, racket courts and pool had remained steady.

There were three laws for approval on the agenda concerning water rates, fees and sprinkler systems. But the approval of these laws was pushed to the next board meeting, as village Attorney Michael Sahn said changes to the laws had not been sufficiently reviewed and the board would need more time.

The trustees decided to hold a public hearing during their Oct. 24 meeting to consider changes to the village’s code concerning the construction of docks, floats and boat lifts.

“Our dock laws may well be outmoded,” Adler said. “It hasn’t been looked at in two decades.”
