A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Friday to mark the grand opening of City Sports, a Boston-based sporting goods retailer whose new Manhasset location is its first Long Island store.

The 19,000-square-foot store operates on two floors at 1900 Northern Blvd. adjacent to furniture dealer Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and women’s clothing boutique Anthropologie. The three replace the former Daffy’s clothing, which closed in 2011.

During the ceremony, City Sports President and Chief Executive Officer Edward Albertian pledged to donate $1,000 to the Manhasset Valley Park for the construction of a new children’s playground.

“I think the store is fantastic,” Albertian said. “We’ve become familiar with the Manhasset community and we think it’s our kind of community and our kind of consumer. I think City Sports makes a lot of sense in this area.”

City Sports was founded in 1983 and operates 24 locations on the East Coast, including two in New York City.

The company aims to offer products that “fit right in between big-box stores and specialty stores,” said Karin Piscatelli, City Sports’ director of marketing.

Albertian added the company retails more than 400 athletic shoes per store and apparel from brands like Nike and Under Armour, but also offers its own line of athletic wear, CS by City Sports, at lower prices and with a lifetime guarantee.

City Sports also restrings tennis rackets, sells electronic sporting equipment and offers running clubs in the communities in which it has locations.

“The difference with us is you won’t see big, heavy dumbbells cluttered all over the place,” Albertian said. “We help you find the best fit, whether that’s in clothing, footwear or helping you find a fitness program that’s right for you.”
