‘The Triangle’ still awaits traffic lights

Village of Plandome Manor officials have said they’ve wanted the project to install traffic signals to the intersection of Stonytown Road, North Plandome Road and Plandome Road, more commonly known as “the triangle” and in recent years as a site of increased car accidents, completed by the end of the summer.

But even though the village and Nassau County have reached an intermunicipal agreement that would help cover the cost and labor of the $200,000 project, work to the implement a traffic island and traffic lights at intersection has still not begun.

“It’s been a nuisance for awhile,” said Plandome Manor Building Inspector Ed Butt.

Talks to install traffic signals at the triangle began nearly three years ago, Butt said, as the village hired engineers from the Melville-based Nelson & Pope Engineers & Surveyers, LLP. to conduct a traffic study for submission to the county to record accidents and the frequency with which they occurred.

The project was approved and the village applied for grants that would help cover the project’s costs. Nelson & Pope engineers would also oversee the work as well, Butt said.

Butt said he expected the project to be completed by summer’s end because of the strength of the communication between Plandome Manor and Nassau County officials, but at press time he did not know “where we are in the queue” for county projects.

Butt said village officials had planned to meet with county officials Tuesday to discuss the scheduling of an official start time for the project, but the meeting was rescheduled for some time next week.

“The work hasn’t started, but the money’s in place, the drawings are in place and then other things have to happen, like notifying police” Butt said. “But once all that coordination is in place, we can get started.”

Butt said he expects the project to be completed by the end of the year, as the toughest part of the project – reaching an agreement on the work and the project’s costs – has already been completed.

“It’s going to happen this year if it’s the last thing I do,” Butt said. “It’s just a matter of sitting down with all the players and getting this thing going.”
