A collision involving a tractor-trailer killed an elderly driver on the Long Island Expressway late Monday night, the Nassau County Police Department’s Highway Patrol Bureau reported.

According to officers with the patrol, they were dispatched to an auto accident involving the cab of a tractor-trailer that was traveling westbound on the Long Island Expressway near exit 34, which leads to New Hyde Park Road, around 11 p.m.

“The vehicle left the roadway, went through a wooded area and came to a rest on the South Service Road of the Expressway,” a statement from the department said.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the body of the driver, a 76-year-old man, who appeared to have suffered a medical emergency and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver’s name is being withheld, the department said.
