The Village of Port Washington North approved Target’s site-plan on Wednesday, giving it the go-ahead to open a small-format store in October.

The village board unanimously approved the site plan for a 48,000 square-foot store to be built at 3 Shore Road in the Soundview Marketplace, replacing a King Kullen that closed in 2015.

“This is very exciting,” Port Washington North Mayor Bob Weitzner said. “With all the changes coming to the Soundview Marketplace, including Target, it will be unrecognizable. It will be phenomenal.”

The Soundview Marketplace is  privately owned.

“We look forward to serving even more guests on Long Island with the addition of Target’s Port Washington store at the Soundview Marketplace,” Mark Schindele, senior vice president, properties, Target said in January. “We think the community will enjoy the convenient shopping experience with Target’s broad and compelling product assortment.”

Target’s flexible-format stores are designed to “allow for stores in smaller locations with assortments that are tailored to meet the needs of local guests,” a press release from Target said.

Target currently operates 32 flexible-format stores and will be opening 30 more in the next three years.

In January, Weitzner said when King Kullen closed, the village was under pressure to do something with the space, and residents were approaching village officials, asking what the plan was.

“This is just really big to occupy the size of the building. It’s great The hard part was getting them here,” Weitzner said in January. “That’s done. And now we’re just waiting for the grand opening in October. We believe this is a major plus for the entire Port Washington community and look forward to opening day in the fall.”

The Target will offer the store’s normal services, including men’s, women’s and kid’s apparel; a grocery section, including fresh produce; a home and stationery assortment; an expanded cosmetic, skin and hair section; a portable electronics and tech section; and services for Target Mobile and order pickup, the village said.

It will not have an in-store Starbucks like many other Target stores.
