Wendy’s to tear down, rebuild in Floral Park

A lawyer for Wendy’s, Thomas Pantelis, asked the Floral Park Board of Trustees on Tuesday for a special use permit to demolish the Wendy’s restaurant  at the intersection of Vanderbilt Avenue and Jericho Turnpike.

It would be replaced by a new Wendy’s with space to  seat about 40 customers. A drive-through will also be added in the new building.

A number of concerns, including snow removal, the minimization of odors from the kitchen, trash collection and traffic flow were addressed during the presentation by the board and members of the public.

“I know it is the middle of the summer, but what are your plans for snow removal?” asked a trustee, Kevin M. Fitzgerald.

In response, representatives from Wendy’s said that they plan to remove the snow, since keeping it on the property would occupy customer parking space.

To solve the problem of odor from the production of fast food, the representatives said they plan to install  new technology to prevent  the types of smells that come from older fast-food restaurants.

The board members stressed that Wendy’s would need to keep the area well maintained, making sure that trash is picked up.

In reports from the board, Trustee Archie T. Cheng announced that road work on Raff Avenue would be completed by the end of the week, after running into a few delays. He also spoke about a new program to fill some soft spots on certain roads to prevent stagnant water from sitting in them.

Cheng and Mayor Thomas J. Tweedy commended the Floral Park Police Department for their work in recently apprehending suspects with multiple weapons in two cases.

The next board of trustees meeting will be held on July 26 in the Village Hall Court Room at 8 p.m.
