Wildcats score back-to-back victories

The Island Now

The New Hyde Park Wildcats U10 Stormcats have moved up in the standings after two consecutive wins over the past two weekends.

On May 10, the Stormcats eked out at 3-2 win over the Lynbrook/E. Rockaway Rebels.  Despite being down three players, the boys played hard and stayed strong throughout the game.

The goaltender team of Christopher Ribaric and Dino Vidaich held the Rebels to just two goals with the excellent defensive team of Ryan Wasserman, Ryan Ommen and James Gensch.

The outstanding offensive playing by Dean Caldwell, Brendan Cooper and LJ Tsiforas kept the pressure on the Rebels’ defense for most of the game and assisted Colin Coope in scoring two of the team’s goals and Christopher Ribaric in sealing the deal with the third.

The Stormcats continued their superb play on May 17 in a 1-0 win against the Floral Park Hawks.  Joseph Vieni, Jack Kareff and Luke Notine showed off their skills both in the goal and on the field. The team’s newest player, Ryan Oommen, played all out on defense, with the tremendous support of Ryan Wasserman and Brendan Cooper.

The offensive team of Dean Caldwell, James Gensch, Jack Kareff, LJ Tsiforas, Christopher Ribaric and Dino Vidaich kept the Hawks on their toes, while Colin Coope put the ball in the net to ensure the win.

COUGARS: (Coaches Scott Liewehr and David Viegas). Although the Cougars tied the Fighting Tigers, 3-3, it was one of the biggest moral victories of the year, given that the same opponent blanked the Cougars in a lopsided game in Week 2.  The game started off slow for the Cougars and history seemed destined to repeat as the team found itself down 0-2 midway through the first half. But the Cougars settled in and regrouped. Christopher Rodgers sparked the offense with a goal before halftime supported by some hard midfield play by Alex Stoyer, Darsh Mirchandani and Ethan Moy. The Cougars really came together as a team during the second half. Ewan Zehnter, Ben Youfsan and Stoyer dominated the midfield with some excellent ball control and passing, finding forwards Simon Thomas and Rodgers, who scored two additional goals to complete the hat trick. The defense was anchored by Nico Liewehr, who refused to give the Tigers a break and both Leo Tching and Mirchandani played relentlessly as well. Great keeper play was turned in by Tching in the first half and Youfsan in the second. All in all, it was a hard-earned draw for the Cougars, who continue to improve each week.

LIONS: (Coach Mike Avallone). The Lions suffered a hard fought 3-1 loss Saturday against the Bobcats. Joseph Calandra scored the lone goal for the Lions. Good defense was played by Jonathon Fraioli and Charlie Avallone.  Strong all-around games were had by Viggo Telleria, Christian Reger and Chris Chen.  Solid goaltending was turned in by Michael Mamo and Milan Patel.

PANTHERS: (Coaches Rob Honovic and Boris Ribaric). The Panthers and Jaguars played one of the best games of the year as both teams worked hard and showed great effort. Although the Panthers came away with a 6-4 loss, the entire team played an amazing game. Jackson Bigeni led the offensive attack, scoring all four goals and controlled the pace of the game with great hustle and playmaking skills. Devan Shah, Vincent Sparacello and Lukas Rinaldi all generated countless offensive opportunities for their team with great determination.  Liam Dempsey and Clayton Wong continued their strong defensive play throughout the game. Sherwin Fernandes and Alexander Cheung supported their team with sound positioning and solid passes. Thomas Honovic, Matthew Ribaric and Aidan McNeely all played solid in goal, making important saves to keep up in the game. Thomas, Matthew and Aidan also showed their ball skills on the field as they controlled the ball through key points of the match. The Panthers are looking forward to their final game of the season and are determined to end on a winning note.

FIGHTING TIGERS: (Coach Kurt Anschlowar). The Fighting Tigers continue to improve their soccer skills via better free kicks, throw-ins and teamwork. Evidence of teamwork is showing, with better passing and cohesion amongst the squad. Aiden Cruz made a few key saves in net.  On defense, Parv Shah, Brandon Leong and Lo-Lo Rios starred. Will Handley, Karan Arora, Vincent Leva and Thomas Anschlowar all played great on offense. The coach and parents are super proud of the team, which  improved its record to 4-3.

New Hyde Park Wildcats TOP Soccer

Juniors:  Red Devils 7, Green Giants 7. During this week’s New Hyde Park TOP soccer activities, it was a high-scoring game for the Juniors, ending in a well-deserved tie.  Both teams were anxious to score and the Green Giants went up 3-0 in the initial five minutes with Jesse Sarro finding the back of the net with his first hat trick of the season. The Red Devils’ Lucas Lee blasted two of his own in the net and then Red player Brandon Cisnerso tied the score.  Anthony Chung and Luke Schwartz each added a goal for the Red team to put their team up by two. Robert Brocchini had a breakaway and a beautiful shot at goal and the Green Giants were catching up. Brian Cisneros tied the score and with five minutes remaining in the game, it was 5-5. Red Devil David Cheung came out of nowhere and scored his first goal of the season and followed with a great steal from a Green Giant to score a second goal.  The score was 7-5 with the clock running down.  But Demond Pearson came down the sideline and shot past the goalie, the score was 7-6 with seconds left. Green Giant Robert Brocchini took charge of the field and scored the tying goal with five seconds left on the clock. It was a great match for the athletes. The Juniors are certainly ready to take on any LIJSL clubs at the TOP soccer tournament on May 31 to be held at the LIJSL Soccer Park in Plainview.

Intermediates:  Red Wildcats 4, Green Giants 1. In a tough game, the Green Giants were overpowered by the Red Wildcats.  Kyle Hanratty played a great game as goalie for Green Giants, but the Red Wildcats were very lucky with some shots on goals. Wildcat Steven DiBiasi had the first goal with an assist by Josh Hom. Green Giant Nick Krieger tied the score with a nice give and go with his teammate John Bertuccio, but the Wildcats sent Chris Cooney as the next striker and he was able to get it past Kyle. Chris Menendez added the third goal and Alex Laroia was just outstanding in goal for the Red team. Connor Bletsch, assistant coach and guest player for the Green Giants, set up some terrific offensive plays, but James Sarro and Lucas Mitacchione just couldn’t get it past Alex Laroia. Mathew Lausev added the fourth goal for the Wildcats. The Green Giants had another shot on goal, which Alex blocked and cleared the ball down field with no time left on the clock. Both teams demonstrated excellent passing and defensive plays during the game. Their coaches feel that they are ready and well prepared for the tournament.

Seniors:   The Seniors took the opportunity to practice their skills and ready themselves for some tough competition at the tournament to be held at LIJSL Soccer Park.  After 30 minutes of serious passing, defending and dribbling practice, the Seniors played a game.  As always, it was the Red team versus the Green team, but with all the excitement, the coaches forgot to keep score.  Both teams were very strong and it was a tight game.  Upon observing the last few minutes of the game, it looked like the New Hyde Park Wildcats were ready to take on the more experienced and older competing teams at the TOP soccer tournament.  Good luck Seniors.  Your parents and coaches will be cheering for you and looking forward to some exciting games.
