Williston Park man charged with attempted murder after Hempstead shooting, police say

A Williston Park man was arrested after allegedly shooting an unknown person from his car on Wednesday evening, according to Nassau County Police.

The alleged shooter, Akini Gibbs, 34, of Willis Avenue, is charged with attempted murder.

Gibbs was driving with a passenger in a gray 2009 BMW on Jackson Street in Hempstead when he allegedly took a handgun from under his seat and fired several shots at the unknown person, according to gang investigations squad detectives.

Hempstead police officers responded to a Shot Spotter notification at the scene and saw Gibb’s car on Front Street, police said.

Gibbs refused to pull over and fled on foot, police said.

He was apprehended in a garage at Phoenix street, police said.

Shell casings were found at the scene of the alleged shooting, police said.

Gibbs is charged with second degree murder, second degree criminal possession of a weapon, third degree burglary and third degree unlawful fleeing of a police officers.

He will be arraigned on Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.
