NHP man finishes plastic surgery fellowship

Stephan Barrientos, a resident of New Hyde Park, graduated from the Herricks Public Schools and was admitted to the Rochester Early Medical Scholars Program (REMS), a competitive combined medical track at the University of Rochester. He graduated magna cum laude and attended medical school at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and obtained a degree as Doctor of Medicine with Distinction in Research.

After completing medical school, Stephan matched to a General Surgery Residency Program at the Brody School of Medicine, Vidant Medical Center, North Carolina. He completed his studies as a Senior Chief Resident in June 2016 and matched as a Resident/ Fellow at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s – Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery Program.

During his time in medical school, Stephan was admitted to a Wound Healing and Repair Research Project at the Hospital of Special Surgery and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. During his general surgery residency, he participated in a year out Senior Research Fellowship in Wound Healing and Repair at NYU Winthrop University Hospital. His research projects have been published in Wound Repair and Regeneration, Molecular Medicine, Advances in Skin and Wound Care and Journal of Cranial Facial Surgery. He has presented his research in symposiums and conferences in New York, Canada, and Mexico. During his Plastic Surgical Residency in Nebraska, he was the principal writer in research aligned to wound healing to reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers, burns, and cranial facial surgery. He assisted in the development of a chief resident clinic to enhance plastic surgery, reconstruction, and cosmetic skills during the plastic surgery residency experience.

Stephan will commence a Pediatric Cranial Facial Fellowship, in July, at The Cranial Facial Center, Dallas, Texas under the mentorship of Jeffrey Fearon, MD, FACS.
